REPORT
“The teaching profession is under siege…”
McKinsey's 2020 report examines how artificial intelligence (AI) can alleviate administrative burdens for K–12 teachers, enabling them to focus more on student learning and development. The study estimates that 20–40% of current teacher hours are spent on tasks that could be automated using existing technology, potentially freeing up approximately 13 hours per week. This reallocation of time could enhance personalised instruction, foster stronger student-teacher relationships, and support social-emotional learning.
Despite concerns about AI replacing educators, the report emphasises that technology should complement, not substitute, human teaching. It highlights that attributes such as inspiring students, building positive classroom climates, and providing mentorship are intrinsic to effective teaching and cannot be replicated by AI. To maximise AI's benefits, the report advocates for targeted investments in technology, professional development for educators, and the sharing of best practices across schools.
